Prof. Carl Becker of Kyoto University
As a part of the 370th anniversary of Ryukoku University in Kyoto,
the university’s alumni of Southern California presents the
commemorative seminar and lecture by Prof. Carl Becker of Kyoto
University on Saturday, Aug. 22 at 1:30 p.m. at the L.A. Nishi
Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, 815 East First Street, Los Angeles,
CA 90012. Admission free and free parking available.
The lecture with the title of “Buddhism in Life and Death” will explore
near death experiences of terminal patients and cares for life and death.
Prof. Becker will speak in both Japanese and English.
Dr. Becker at Kyoto University Graduate School is full professor of
Kokoro Research Center and Department of Human and
Environmental Studies.
Prof. Becker received his Ph.D. in Comparative East-West Philosophy
from the East-West Center of the University of Hawaii in 1981 after
studying in India and Japan. Becker was sent to Japan to study in
1974 by the Prince Akihito Scholarship of Hawaii.
He taught Asian Philosophy at Southern Illinois University and the
University of Hawaii, and Ethics and Comparative Religions at
Osaka University, Tenri University, and Tsukuba University.
He garnered national awards from the Society for Religion and
Psychology Research; the SIETAR (Society for Intercultural
Education, Training and Research) Award for Cross-cultural
Understanding; and an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Bombay for
comparative studies of death and dying. His research on terminal
care, medical and environmental ethics has been taken up by
government researchers as well as by news media.
Becker’s English books include Breaking the Circle: Death and
Afterlife in Buddhism (SIU, 1993), Asian and Jungian Views of
Ethics (Greenwood, 1999), Danger in Daily Life (Eihosha, 2002),
and Time for Healing (Paragon House, 2003).
